A deck can add extra entertaining space and be the backdrop for many great memories made in your home. Wood decks however will wear over time that is why proper maintenance is imperative if you want to get the most out of your outdoor space. Here is how you can take care of your deck so you can soak up the sun for years to come.
Deck Maintenance Tips
1. Keep it clean
Once or twice a year it is great to give your deck a solid clean. Start by removing all furniture and/or plants to give you access to the deck boards. With a wide broom sweep off any debris, dirt, or leaves that have gathered on the surface during the fall months. After you have finished sweeping, wet the boards with a hose or a pressure washer. It is important to have a wet deck before applying any sort of wood cleaner.
Wash with wood cleaner

Apply your wood cleaner to the surface of all the wet deck boards. Take a break, maybe grab a drink, and let the wood cleaner rest for approximately 10 minutes. This period allows the cleaner to work its magic and pull out the grime and dirt from the boards. After your 10 minutes is up (and your thirst is quenched) grab your broom again and sweep up all that newly released dirt.
Pro Tip: Use a paint roller with a long handle extension to easily apply the wood cleaner to the deck.
Spray & scrub away mold, mildew, and stains
To finish up your deep clean, grab some mold and mildew spray to apply to some of the trouble areas. This spray also works great to diminish staining on railings and banisters. Just grab a rag, squirt, and scrub to spruce up your deck and protect it from further staining in the future.
2. Inspect Your Deck

Inspecting your deck routinely is important to make sure that you, your family, and your guests are safe. Begin by feeling the boards and look for the following:
- loose deck boards
- rotting areas
- Places that need to be secured
- or boards that need to be replaced
If you notice multiple boards require replacement, consider resurfacing your deck for a cohesive appearance since the new deck boards will have more of a fresh colour compared to the original wood. Resurfacing your deck is a cost-effective solution to make your backyard feel brand new.
3. Rearrange Patio Furniture Periodically

Regardless of whether you subscribe to the ancient methods of Feng Shui, switching up the layout of your deck furniture can help prevent the deck boards from sun damage. If you never move your outdoor decor you will begin to notice mismatch patches of wood where the furniture is not. This is due to the uncovered spaces of wood being exposed to UV rays and the elements over the seasons. Challenge yourself to rearrange your space, who knows it may even feel like a new deck every year!
